Halliday Ratings for Austin’s and 6Ft6 2023

Each year, wineries around Australia wait for their Halliday scores. It is a way to get outside feedback and reviews on your wines, that is comparable year on year. Jeni Port is the reviewer for the Geelong region and this new format means that our regions wines are tasted together. This is a more accurate way to get reviews, a Barossa shiraz being tasted with a Geelong shiraz, for example wouldn’t do either wine justice.

This year, we have been pleasantly surprised by our scores and are very excited to be able to share them with you.

Austin’s Halliday Winery Rating

5 Star Winery

Outstanding winery capable of producing wines of very high quality, and did so this year. Will have at least two wines rated at 95 points or above.

Austin’s Wines Halliday Ratings for 2023

Austin’s Riesling 2020

Rated 94/100 points, SILVER

Slow, cold fermentation followed by 6 months on lees. Highly fragrant in lemon citrus, lime blossom, talc and spiced apple. Holds impressive concentration and length with a leesy nougat mealiness running along a gentle, textural palate. Complex, with an intriguing almost-rosewater spice. – Jeni Port, Published 26 April 2022

Austin’s Chardonnay 2020

Rated 90/100 points, SILVER

Pressed to French oak (30% new) for wild ferment and 9 months on lees. Late flowering and low yields during the 2020 season and the winemaker reports higher than usual acidity in the fruit. There has been close attention paid to the feel of the wine and working complexity into its folds. Concentrated aromas of white peach, quince, citrus, vanilla pod and mango skin. Builds in the mouth with creaminess and a light savouriness.. – Jeni Port, Published 26 April 2022

Austin’s Pinot Noir 2020

Rated 95/100 points, GOLD

Matured 9 months in French oak (40% new). A tightly layered and complex wine, that speaks of the wilder side of the grape: the briar, undergrowth, tilled earth and black fruits. Taut on the palate with smooth tannins and plenty of dark cherry, plum and dark chocolate. That layer of spice caps it off beautifully. – Jeni Port, Published 12 May 2022

Austin’s Curated Off Dry Riesling 2021

Rated 94/100 points, SILVER

An off-dry style of riesling that has nicely managed the tricky balancing act between acidity and sugar, producing a charming, delicate wine. These forces play off each other, bringing a luscious sheen to the stone fruits, citrus, lime cordial and orange-peel spice flavours with a clean acid cut. Chalky, musky, sweet florals to close. – Jeni Port, Published 04 April 2022

Austin’s Curated Shiraz 2021

Rated 95/100 points, GOLD

Hand-picked fruit, de stemmed into 600L concrete eggs, 20% whole bunches, wild ferment, 21 days on skins, maturation in new Croatian barriques and seasoned French barriques (50% new) for 8 months. Some new winemaking territory visited here, exploring the role of whole bunches, concrete eggs and Croatian oak, amongst other things, and the result is an intriguing mix of the savoury and the sweet-fruited, the textural and the earthy dry. Dark cherry, cherry liqueur, cassis, dried herbs, smokey charcuterie and leathery, spicy oak broaden our interpretation and appreciation of Geelong shiraz in an exciting way.. – Jeni Port, Published 12 April 2022

6Ft6 Prosecco NV

Rated 90/100 points, SILVER

Sourced from the region most associated with prosecco in Australia and sealed with a screw cap, this super-effervescent bubbly hits the p-spot. Lemon sorbet, apple and pear vibrancy to start is joined by a light nuttiness on the palate. So much energy here with tangy acidity. Good flavour intensity throughout and a bubble that never gives up. – Jeni Port, Published 13 August 2021

6Ft6 Prosecco Rosé NV

Rated 86/100 points, BRONZE

A charming rosé, candy pink in hue. Candy floss and watermelon-bright in aromas and flavours, with a prosecco lemon-rind finish. Simple and tasty.- Jeni Port, Published 03 August 2022

6Ft6 Pinot Gris 2021

Rated 90/100 points, SILVER

A good follow-up to the 2020 gris with the King Valley once again being a good go-to blending partner. Combines all the things we want from the grape: the creamy mouthfeel, the overall chalky dryness and in between, a ripe core of spiced apple, nashi pear and citrus with while florals.- Jeni Port, Published 26 July 2022

6Ft6 Pinot Noir 2021

Rated 89/100 points, BRONZE

Love the vibrant cherry-purple colour and the energy to this wine, with its just-crushed red cherry, pomegranate, cranberry-like tartness and dusty, musky florals. Easy to love and best drunk young.- Jeni Port, Published 03 August 2022

6Ft6 Shiraz 2021

Rated 89/100 points, BRONZE

Arrives in the most stunning, brilliant purple hues, and is straightaway ready to impress in juicy, jubey blackberry, cassis and raspberry bon-bon confection with black peppercorn and bush-mint intensity. There is so much happening here, it’s almost a meal in itself..- Jeni Port, Published 03 August 2022
