New Release James Halliday Scores are in…

And they are our best wine ratings yet!

We have just released the newest vintages in our Custom Collection. Our Custom Collection wines are made to the highest of standards, in small batch quantities. They are a true expression of the terroir in the Moorabool Valley region. Hand picked, hand crafted and kept in our wine vault until they are at their finest. We can also recommend each wine can be cellared and you can find further details below on cellaring suggestions.

Now who is James Halliday and what do these scores mean?

Who is James Halliday? From http://www.winecompanion.com.au

Respected wine critic and vigneron James Halliday has a career that spans over 40 years, but he is most widely known for his witty and informative writing about wine.
As one of the founders of Brokenwood in the Lower Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, and thereafter founder of Coldstream Hills in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, James is an unmatched authority on every aspect of the wine industry, from the planting and pruning of vines through to the creation and marketing of the finished product. His winemaking has led him to sojourns in Bordeaux and Burgundy, and he is constantly in demand as a wine judge in Australia and overseas.

What is the Halliday Wine Companion?

Each year the Halliday Wine Companion is released, it is a complete wine bible with ratings from wineries all over Australia who submit their wines for review. Each August we eagerly anticipate the release of these ratings as it is a great way to benchmark wines year on year.

What do the ratings mean?

97-99 Exceptional. Wines that have won a major trophy or trophies in important wine shows, or are of that standard.

95-96 Outstanding. Wines of gold medal standard, usually with a great pedigree.

94  Silver – Gold Standard. Wines on the cusp of gold medal status, virtually indistinguishable from those wines receiving 95 points.

90-93 Highly Recommended. Wines of silver medal standard; wines of great quality, style and character, and worth of a place in any cellar

Custom Collection Ratings:

Our newest releases in the Custom Collection have received the following ratings and reviews:

  • 2014 Ellyse Chardonnay received 96 points

A superb example of Geelong chardonnay, citrus, melon and stone fruits lead to a remarkably fine and tightly wound palate. Mineral, chalky and pithy, it lingers gracefully with great precision and purity. Cellar to 2028

  • 2014 Spencer Shiraz received 95 points

Hand-picked fruit was further passed along a sorting table in the winery, wild-fermented and after 7 days post-ferment maceration pressed to thick-staved 600l puncheons and a 600l concrete egg. A full-bodied wine deriving part of its power from structural elements and part from the tightly focused black fruits. Like its less expensive sibling, is tightly furled up, pleading for time, but has so much of its future obvious I’ll recognise its quality now. Cellar to 2039
